Four Pine Crest students managed to meet their deadline and win third place in the Student Television Network’s annual six-day challenge.

PCTV journalists Allison Samowitz (senior), Austin Fields (sophomore), Matthew Kronengold (junior), and Roxy Ackerman (sophomore) competed in the “2013 Fall National News Feature Challenge” from October 11 to October 17.

With the topic of “Fear of the Unknown,” these four reporters were inspired by their own fear: the college admission process.

“With the demanding standards from the college admission offices, students are struggling through their four years in high school to find a niche to stand out. Not to mention with standardized testing and essays, a lot of time is spent worrying if their application will be sufficient,” Austin Fields reports.

Their piece, titled “The Waiting Game,” features Brittany Paris (junior) talking about how the admission process, even though she is only a junior “already freaks [her] out” and Jeffery Shea, one of Pine Crest School’s college counselors, discussing the demands and challenges students face.

All four students collaborate on PCTV’s signature news program of their own creation, The Rundown. Completely student run, the Rundown offers a fresh perspective on relevant news topics discussed around the world.

You can watch their first episode, which premiered on September 30th, here and the second episode, available starting on November 12, here.
