Pine Crest School’s Digital Media Production Department has partnered with PBS NewsHour Student Reporting Labs (SRL) program. Pine Crest is the only school in Broward and Palm Beach Counties to participate in this program.

This collaborative partnership connects Pine Crest PCTV broadcasting students with PBS to produce stories that explore how critical national issues impact local communities. Students have an opportunity to develop digital media, critical thinking, problem solving, and communication skills while producing original news reports and receiving real-time feedback from PBS mentors and their Pine Crest teachers, Ashley Porter, Digital Media Production Specialist, and Jaimee Rashbaum, Broadcast Journalism Instructor. Students’ work may be featured on the broadcasts, websites, and social media platforms of PBS NewsHour, South Florida PBS, and Student Reporting Labs.

Already this school year, students participating in the program received a classroom visit from SRL Program Manager Victor Fernandez. Mr. Fernandez shared with students the upcoming projects and themes that they will be working on together. A story about youth voting by Gabrielle Khoriaty ’20 and Ryan Dudak ’20 was recently featured on social media pages for Student Reporting Labs and for Your South Florida, a public affairs program on South Florida PBS.

“Working with Student Reporting Labs will offer our students lifelong skills and a valuable, unique opportunity to gain real-world experience as they get out in the community and tell important stories,” said Ms. Porter.
